What is a Lawyer's Role For Mediation?

Mediation is not a substitute for the services of an attorney, but more appropriate use of attorneys. Legal advice is necessary to protect the legal rights and obligations of the concerned parties.
Both husband and wife are encouraged to seek legal review of their agreement and to consult with an attorney on specific questions of law. The mediator will provide the couple and their lawyers with a complete Memorandum and Understanding, which articulates the specifics of the agreement. It is not necessary, however to "retain" an attorney for mediated agreements.
